About MAP
Background:
MAP is a voluntary organisation which aims to improve the lives of people experiencing serious mental health problems by:
- Providing and developing specialist independent advocacy for people with a mental health problem in Pembrokeshire.
- Providing and developing specialist independent mental health advocacy information and training.
- Promoting the need for specialist independent mental health advocacy.
MAP was formed in 1995 from a service users group and started providing advocacy services in 1998. MAP has been an integral participant in developing advocacy services and promoting awareness of needs for people with mental health problems, locally and in the wider Dyfed Powys and Wales arena.
MAP currently has 5 full time and 3 part time advocates covering Children and Young Persons, Adult, Older Persons Services and IMCA and IMHA. MAP has a part time administrator and a part time finance/funding officer.
IMCA Service - Independent Mental Capacity Advocates. This is a service provided in partnership with Eiriol, our allied service in Carmarthenshire. The service covers Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire and was set up in response to the Mental Capacity Act 2007 and authorised by the Welsh Assembly Government. The service has 4 part time advocates.

IMHA Service - Independent Mental Health Advocates. In partnership with South Wales Mental Health Advocacy (SWMHA), MAP has been commissioned to provide the IMHA service to patients in Swansea, Neath & Port Talbot, Bridgend, Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and the western Vale of Glamorgan from 3rd November 2008. It was set up in response to the Mental Health Act 2007 and authorised by the Welsh Assembley Government.
